...winter storm watch in effect from this afternoon through late
sunday night...

The national weather service in cheyenne has issued a winter
storm watch...which is in effect from this afternoon through late
sunday night.

* an upper level system will move across the area saturday night
into sunday night allowing for periodic light snow to accumulate
through monday morning. The best chances for heavy snowfall
accumulations will be from sunday morning through sunday
afternoon.

* expect possible snow accumulations of 10 to 14 inches in the
sierra madre and medicine bow mountains with 9 to 12 inches in
the northern and southern laramie range. Although the snow will
gradually accumulate over the lower elevations...expect possible
snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches by monday morning.

* the surface pressure gradient will begin to tighten across
southern wyoming late saturday evening into sunday morning
allowing for easterly upslope winds to increase to 20 to 30 mph
along the eastern mountain slopes. This will allow for blowing
and drifting snow with limited visibilities at times.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant
snow that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest
forecasts.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 3 pm mst this
afternoon.

* timing: Snow will continue over the area through the afternoon.
Through midday the snow will be heavy at times over parts of the
western nebraska panhandle. The snow will decrease in intensity
this afternoon from west to east.

* new snow accumulations: 2 to 4 inches of new snow are expected
over the plains of southeast wyoming and the western nebraska
panhandle by late afternoon. Five to 10 inches are expected in
the higher terrain of the southern laramie range...snowy range
and sierra madre range. Total snowfall will be 5 to 9 inches
over the lower elevations.

* winds/visibilities: Northeast winds will be between 10 and 15

Well it looks like Winter is here. Still a bit early for such cold temps. at least earlier than it has been for the past 15+ years. Usually those below zero temps don't hit us until Jan. sometimes Feb. Those temps hit us early last year too and the weather was messed up all the rest of the year and on into Spring and Summer. Not that I was complaining about having a cooler Summer than normal, but the gardens and flowers didn't do as well, especially viney plants.
