Description: Banner Good Samaritan began its days as a tuberculosis sanitarium, the Deaconess Hospital and Home, which was founded by a Methodist group in 1911. In 1928 it was renamed Good Samaritan Hospital and began to offer a wider range of services to the local community. Today Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center is run by Banner Health and is one of the largest hospitals in Arizona, with 673 licensed beds. Banner Good Samaritan has 2,000 physicians representing 54 specialties. It features 16 inpatient operating suites and 8 outpatient operating suites. The hospital leads the state in heart procedures and is a prominent research center for Alzheimer’s and spinal-cord injuries. The hospital specializes in heart and cancer care and is a leader in kidney and liver transplants, high-risk obstetrics, and multiple births. It also offers general maternity services, a sleep-disorders program, a Level I trauma center, rehabilitation, and outpatient services. The institute’s Vein Center provides treatment for varicose veins, mostly in the doctor’s office.The hospital has 92 beds dedicated to intensive-care and intermediate-care services. Banner Good Samaritan’s emergency room trauma center treats patients from around the Southwest and Mexico. The hospital has the state’s first positron emission tomography (PET) scanner, which is used to monitor the chemical activity of living cells within tissue. Oncology services include a bone-marrow transplantation program run in conjunction with the City of Hope National Medical Center in Los Angeles. The campus also houses the 60-bed Banner Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Institute, one of the top rehab centers in the state, and Banner Good Samaritan Behavioral Health Center, which offers both inpatient and outpatient mental health services.
