Description: Barrow Neurological Institute opened at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1962 as advances in brain surgery and neurology made such a center feasible. It is recognized as a leader in neurological innovations. The institute treats aneurysms, vascular tumors, malformations, occlusions, ischemia, epilepsy, chronic pain, and trauma. Barrow is one of the largest neuroscience centers in the Southwest, with 8 dedicated surgical suites, a postanesthesia care area, 24 intensive-care beds, 15 intermediate-care beds, 24 acute-care beds, a 38-bed neurorehabilitation inpatient unit, a stroke unit, a spine unit, an epilepsy monitoring unit, a subacute rehabilitation unit, and outpatient neurology specialty clinics. A pediatric neurosurgery section helps children with complex conditions such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, craniofacial abnormalities, brain tumors, and head injuries. The institute is part of a Level I trauma center for brain and spinal cord injury victims in central Arizona. It is also a teaching hospital and a research facility. Treatments pioneered at Barrow are now being used around the world.
