Description: It might seem like you’re walking into a dark cave in the middle of a strip mall. But that’s what a lot of English pubs feel like in the UK, minus the sweltering heat and strip mall next to a convenience store and gas station. Cornish Pasty Co. serves meat pies, but far better than the dry steak and kidney deal you get around London. This place has everything, and there are far too many tasty pasties to list here. The bangers and mash (homemade sausage with sage, red wine gravy, grilled onions, and mashed potatoes served with a side of gravy) and chicken Alfredo (chicken breast, ham, bacon, roasted red potatoes, and creamy Alfredo sauce) are baked with care behind the bar in giant ovens. The crusty, meat-filled pastry pockets date to around 1200, when women cooked them for the poor workers who could afford little else. The Tempe restaurant, which has a sister spot in Mesa, serves a nice variety of imported and local beers. It’s easy to find the perfect complement to your hearty pasty dinner.
