Tucson has an astonishing number of free or inexpensive publications covering all manner of topics, from poetry to music to parenting to bicycling, not to mention a slew of papers devoted to tourism and entertainment. This is good news, because wherever you are you’ll find something to help you enjoy Tucson. If you prefer listening over reading, there’s a radio station geared to every taste.

This chapter covers the major papers, magazines, and radio and television stations available in Tucson. The list is fairly complete, but remember that things change: Publications come and go, radio stations switch formats, and cable companies get new names.

2. Arizona Daily Wildcat

Description: First published in 1899, this daily (Mon through Fri) college paper has a following off campus as well. It can be found around the university area. The Wildcat is free and contains well-written articles and editorials on local, state, and national politics as well as campus news. It’s also a great source for information and schedules regarding games, seminars, and concerts at the university.

Description: This is Pima County’s legal newspaper of record and contains some business and legal news. But primarily it’s a list of legal notices filed within the county. The paper was started in 1966 and currently has a circulation of 1,000. A year’s subscription is $115, or you can purchase a single issue at newsstands or newspaper boxes for $1.

Description: This is a Web-only compendium of blogs published by Gannett in partnership with Tucson newspapers. It covers real estate, dining, politics, and a wide range of other topics.

5. Arizona Gourmet Living

6. Arizona Jewish Post

Description: Published since 1946, this biweekly Jewish-interest paper keeps the community up to date on events, news, and people. The Post is only distributed through patron contribution in lieu of subscription, but newcomers can receive 3 months for free on request.

7. Aztec Press

Description: Aztec Press is the student-run weekly paper printed 8 times a year at the city’s community college. It’s free and covers news pertinent to the campus.

Description: This lively free monthly is a great kids’ publication, especially if your child likes to work puzzles, play games, enter contests, or actually write articles. Parents will find a lot of useful information about day care, events, and even places to eat with the little guys. There is also a section that is written mostly by middle-school students and by members of a local Young Reporters Program. This paper can be found all over town at eating establishments, bookstores, and the Children’s Museum.

Description: Targeting the Catalina foothills and northwest communities, this monthly magazine is delivered free to more than 50,000 households in that area as well as distributed free at select bookstores, libraries, restaurants, and coffee shops. The regular features include travel, arts, nature, history, people, restaurant listings, gallery listings, and desert gardening. People outside the distribution area can subscribe for a yearly fee via bulk mail.

It covers the arts, entertainment, business news, and events happening in the rapidly developing downtown area.
