Description: St. Helena’s well-preserved Victorian charm even extends to its newspaper, the Star, owned by Lee Enterprises. The paper attempts to stay within the city limits, plus Angwin and its Howell Mountain environs. The Star astutely covers the important local issues—growth, tourism, elections—and its wine coverage is comprehensive. (There is a special wine edition every October.) But even the editors will admit that the feature best known for reeling in readers is the precious police log. You don’t really know St. Helena until you have studied this compendium of barking dogs, double-parked cars, and nosy neighbors.
