Description: The name says it all. Children’s Hospital is a health care system caring for kids with the full spectrum of needs from wellness and prevention through the most complex care. Serving a 12-state region, Children’s has been an innovator in medicine since it was founded in 1908, with firsts including the largest and most successful pediatric heart transplant program, the nation’s first pediatric transport system, and the discovery of toxic shock syndrome. In 1997 it was designated as a Level I pediatric trauma center, the only one in the region devoted solely to children. In 2007 a new 1.44-million-square-foot facility was built adjacent to the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine in Aurora to enhance treatment and research opportunities with faculty and students. The new campus has 270 beds and medical equipment especially designed for children, but its mission remains the same—clinical care, research, education, and advocacy. Beyond the walls of the hospital, Children’s offers pediatric services throughout the metropolitan area, the state, and the 12-state Rocky Mountain region through partnerships with other health care institutions and clinics. Children’s also operates three specialty physician satellite offices, four community-based urgent and emergency care sites, and three specialty care centers. The hospital itself handles more than 10,000 inpatient and almost 350,000 outpatient visits yearly.
