Description: Through the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, the federal government delivers health services to people who have previously served in the military. With 128 beds in use, it provides medical, surgical, neurological, rehabilitation, and psychiatric care. The center also has a 100-bed Nursing Home Care Unit and reaches out to other parts of Front Range Colorado through outlying clinics and a mobile MEDIVAN program. Among their special programs are care and treatment for aging veterans, female veterans, homeless veterans, ex-POWs, and Vietnam-era veterans and issues relating to Agent Orange and the Persian Gulf. The center is also a major research site, the 14th largest in the Veterans Administration, with projects including a Schizophrenia Center, a VA Alcohol Research Center, and an AIDS Clinical Trial Unit. A new and long-awaited facility is scheduled to open in 2015 on the Aurora medical campus; it’s being built on the former site of the Fitzsimons Army Hospital.
