Description: Although Spalding is officially in Denver, it actually has patients throughout the metro area. Its 169 licensed beds are located at other hospitals, in wings or units that specialize in the treatment of stroke, brain injury, chronic pain, neck/back injuries, neurological disorders, multiple sclerosis, and orthopedic problems. Spalding’s history dates back to the Episcopal Church’s Convalescent Home, which opened in 1914 to serve poor women and children. It was sold, with proceeds going toward a new 80-bed facility that was opened in 1965. In 1988 it opened a hospital-within-a-hospital at Swedish Medical Center, providing rehabilitation services in a hospital setting. That model continues today with 100 beds and specialization in treatment for a wide variety of injuries and medical conditions. Inpatient and outpatient specialty care is offered at the main Aurora facility as well as at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. Spalding is a joint venture of HealthONE and Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation.
