Description: University Hospital moved from its old, cramped inner-city location in 2007 to the shiny new Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. On the site of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, it joined the University of Colorado’s medical schools, a state-of-the-art cancer center, an eye institute, a research library, the Center for Bioethics and Humanities, Children’s Hospital, and a growing bioscience research park. Its first phase, the Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion, opened in 2004 as a family-focused community hospital. Those portions of the hospital that provide highly specialized care came next, joining the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion and the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion on a campus that will consist of more than 3 million square feet of educational, research, clinical, and support space once it is completed. University Hospital was founded in 1921, performed the nation’s first successful liver transplant, and consistently ranks among top hospitals in US News & World Report and many other rating agencies. Pushing the medical frontiers, the hospital has developed special expertise in areas ranging from heart surgery to cancer. All the providers at the hospital are faculty members at University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, one of the country’s premier academic research institutions. It’s one of two public hospitals that serve Metro Denver residents.
