Restaurants - Jacksonville, Florida

Restaurants

You’d think that with its proximity to the ocean and river, Jacksonville would be a one-note-Johnny when it comes to restaurants, focusing only on seafood to the exclusion of international or contemporary cuisine. Well, think again! While that might have once been the case, the city’s palates have collectively refined, and local restaurateurs have taken leaps to launch new intimate and experimental eateries resulting in happy local restaurant-goers and options galore.

Of course, locals remain spoiled when it comes to fresh seafood. With menu items ranging from boiled shrimp to sushi, Jacksonville’s seafood menus brim with briny goodness. Whether you’re headed to a backwater fish camp (a real Insider treat) or dining seaside, the area aims to please with fresh, plentiful offerings from the sea.

Plan your trip to coincide with one of the area’s many seafood festivals and special events. The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival draws thousands to Fernandina Beach each spring, and the annual Kingfish Tournament, dedicated to attracting big-game anglers, is the largest of its kind in the country.

If you prefer your dinner to come from the turf (rather than the surf), local barbecue restaurants like Mojo and Fred Cotten’s serve up the slow-cooked variations of beef, pork, and chicken that made the South famous.

In short, you will not leave Jacksonville hungry.

This chapter offers not just some, but all of my Insider team’s personal faves for any meal of the day. More necessarily than in any other chapter, the restaurant listings are organized by neighborhood so that you can eat close to where your activities take you, or plan your day based on maintaining proximity to a certain dish. Jacksonville is a city of neighborhoods, which you will quickly learn as you travel around town hunting down these foodie favorites.

If you’re interested in really digging-in and eating like a lifetime local, read what the locals claim as the city’s quintessential food. Trust us; what you learn there may not be pretty, but it may be as close as you can get to the divine for under $7.

The skinny on reservations is simple: they’re generally not necessary, unless the price point or size of the eatery would give you reason to think so. So, use your common sense and, when in doubt, call and check.

Best of all, dress is hip-casual at almost every Jacksonville restaurant, but, again, use common sense and call ahead of you have any questions.

If one of our favorite restaurants has multiple locations, you will find it listed under the location that we feel is the most visit-worthy, with the other locations listed under it.

Unless otherwise noted, all restaurants accept major credit cards. Most restaurants in Jacksonville are closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day, so if you want to dine out, call ahead and check. Sundays and Mondays tend to be a dead zone, especially with the smaller local eateries, so definitely check by phone before you head out.

Note: If a restaurant is open during the general lunch and dinner hours of 11 a.m. through 10 p.m., we simply state that the establishment is “open for lunch and dinner.” However, if the restaurant keeps unusual hours, we will spell it out for you.

For now, Bold City is making only ales, IPAs and English ales to be precise, and their plan is to brew 12 different beers—from hoppy to malty—throughout the year. Because it licensed as a micro-brewery, Bold City cannot serve food, but has worked out a catering agreement so that visitors to the Tap Room can have something to nosh on while they drink. Tours of the brewhouse run on the hour, Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. The Tap Room is open Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to close, and Saturday from 1 p.m. to close.

4. The Brick

City: Jacksonville, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (904) 387-0606
Address: 3585 St. Johns Ave.

Description: The Brick’s casual-chic demeanor, street-side outdoor seating, exposed brick, and impressive pieces by local artists fit well with general mien of the Shops of Historic Avondale. Come on a night when this corner restaurant brings in live music, but don’t expect to be able to talk over it, even if the bands play at normal levels the exposed brick renders the restaurant quite noisy. Still, the solid menu (think Portobello mushroom sandwich and crab cakes), solid wine list, and skilled bartenders have made The Brick a Jacksonville staple among those in the know. Come for Sunday brunch when the bar serves up spicy Bloody Marys. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. The Brick accepts reservations, which are a good idea, especially on weekends.

5. Casbah Cafe

Description: Casbah Cafe serves Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Customers enjoy the falafel, the lamb kabobs, and the Casbah pizzas, not to mention the selection of desserts and pastries. Dine indoors or outdoors on the garden patio. Ask to sit on the floor poufs (think ottoman or bean bag) and eat at the low tables in the hookah lounge. The cafe serves African coffees and has a global beer and wine selection. Belly dancers perform Thursday through Saturday nights. For something different, try the hookah pipes—3-foot ornate Middle Eastern water pipes meant for smoking flavored tobacco. For even more on the restaurant’s offerings, look for Casbah in the Nightlife chapter. Children’s choices are available. Open every day from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

6. Cozy Tea Room

City: Jacksonville, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (904) 329-3964
Address: 1029 Park St.

Description: I learned about the Cozy Tea Room after my most trusted Insider pals has gone there for one of the tea room’s monthly, multi-course, Indian dinners. The dinners coincide with 5 Points’ First Fridays (first Friday of every month) and are so popular that they are booked solid months in advance. Day to day, the 10-table teahouse has an afternoon tea menu, a chocolate truffle menu, and proper English scones. Based on the idea of a proper English tea room, the kind that owner Shika Patel has missed ever since leaving the England of her youth, the shop is cozy, intimate, and perfect for a date, girlfriend gathering, or afternoon unwind.

7. The Derby House

City: Jacksonville, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (904) 356-0227
Address: 1068 Park St.

Description: Insiders know that The Derby House (technically Georgi’s Derby House) is the best place in 5 Points to nurse a hangover. Open since 1944, this is the greasy spoon your parents warned you about: it’s cheap, salty, and delightfully off the radar, even though it sits in the heart of 5 Points. Now this corner joint has started hosting music on Friday nights, and we hear there’s beer.

8. Dreamette

City: Jacksonville, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (904) 388-2558
Address: 3646 Post St.

Description: There’s a reason why the Dreamette has over 5,000 Facebook fans. The die-hard local devotion that nearly every Insider feels to this ice-cream shack knows no bounds. Located in Murray Hill, Dreamette has been serving the same soft-serve menu from their front window since 1948. The main draw is the soft serve ice cream, which you order at the walk-up window. Dreamette staff will also make you a sundae, milkshake, banana split, or float. Plop down at one of the picnic benches around the side and lick away. The general rule seems to be that they close at sunset, year-round.

9. European Street Restaurant

City: Jacksonville, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (904) 398-1717
Address: 5500 Beach Blvd. (near University Boulev

Description: The San Marco location and the Riverside locationboth draw happy bands of locals with their massive selection of brews on tap and in bottles—20 drafts and more than 130 bottles, to be exact. European Street features a daily happy hour from 2 to 7 p.m. with two-for-one specials on all beer and wine. The term “happy hour” fits well, because when the place is packed and the beer is flowing, it’s hard to spot a frowner in the house. The Listening Room in the San Marco location draws local and regional bands to its tiny stage every Thursday. All locations are open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for the 5500 Beach Blvd. location, which closes at 9 p.m.

10. Fox Restaurant

City: Jacksonville, FL
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (904) 387-2669

Description: Locals know this as the hole-in-the-wall that gives greasy spoons a good name. From the horse-and-hound-themed hodge-podge gallery on the walls to the vinyl booths, The Fox certainly isn’t wasting money on decor, but instead is turning its attention toward keeping locals happy with breakfast staples. Don’t feel deterred by the line out the door on weekend mornings, tables tend to turn quickly as folks pack up and head for the city’s various farmers’ markets and art fairs. This is almost every Insider’s go-to place because it’s as good for celebrating a new romance as it is for soothing a hangover.

11. Let Them Eat Cake

The small case is filled with macaroons, peanut-butter sandwich cookies, and artfully frosted cupcakes with real buttercream icing.
