Description: No doubt, you’ve eaten Mexican before. But you’ve never eaten Mexican like this. From the glowing multi-colored neon sign on the outside, to the elegant, slightly old-fashioned long bar inside, owner Rocco Mangel has put together the funkiest, tastiest, most innovative, liveliest Mexican restaurant you’ve ever seen.True to the restaurant’s name, you can sample from among 225 different types of tequila. The Margarita mix can be found nowhere else—because it’s made here. The corn tortillas are made by hand, and cooked fresh in a special Mexican oven called a comal. The late-night menu, along with its location near so many nightspots, ensures that Rocco’s Tacos & Tequila Bar is buzzing until the wee hours.Start off with one of the antejitos (soups or small plates), such as tortilla soup or jalapeño rellenos (stuffed fried jalapeño peppers, with cotija—a hard cow’s milk cheese—lime crema, and avocado ranch). For an entree, if you’re interest is piqued by the idea of a hamburger, Mexican-style, go for the hamburguesa Mexicano, with jalapeños, Chihauhau cheese, salsa, guacamole, and fries. The chile rellenos (charred poblano chiles, Chihuahua and goat cheese, salsa rojo, crema, cotija cheese, red rice, black beans) is excellent. There are six combination platters, each giving you a good sampler of authentic Mexican cooking. And, of course, at a place named Rocco’s Tacos, you’ve got to try Rocco’s Tacos, such as cochinitas achiote (slow-roasted pork) or camarones (shrimp). The restaurant also has a fun kid’s menu. And you should be here for the biggest party of the year, on Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day!
