Description: Like Oldham County, Shelby County Public Schools has been a leader in the implementation of the Kentucky Education Reform Act, and it was a pioneer in the region for the use of computers in the classroom. It has a program for gifted and talented students that starts off informally in the lower grades and progresses to advanced placement in the upper grades. Located in Shelbyville, approximately 30 miles east of Louisville, the district lies in a rural community that has experienced progressive industrial growth over the past two decades. Some 1,800 students attend its flagship school, Shelby County High School, which is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; the average ACT composite score is 21.5, and the SAT average is 1100.
