City: Truro, MA
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (508) 487-1121
Address: 27 Highland Rd.

Description: This is the nation’s first lighthouse. The original Cape Cod Light first stood watch on these sandy cliffs in 1797 and was lit by whale-oil lamps. By 1857, the tower was in danger of falling down, so the current Highland Lighthouse was constructed that year. Remarkably, the original whale-oil lamps were in use until the turn of the 20th century, when they were replaced by a modern lamp system. The light system was updated with electricity in 1932. Sitting atop the cliffs of Truro and with a range of some 20 to 30 miles, the light is the first seen by transatlantic mariners as they approach the northeast coast. The 80-foot tower was moved back from the cliff in 1996 and thus saved from erosion threatening to destroy it. Highland Light is open mid-May through mid-Oct, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Admission is $4 for the tower, and $6 for the tower and adjoining museum. Children must be 48 inches tall to tour the tower.
