This Greek Revival building, adjoining the Farnsworth Art Museum, is the result. Many original furnishings remain, depicting the life of a Victorian businessman and his family in the Penobscot Bay area. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Admission includes the Farnsworth Art Museum.

4. Rockland Breakwater Light

City: Rockland, ME
Category: Tours & Attractions
Address: Jameson Point

Description: The lighthouse here is not the primary attraction. An 18-foot-tall square tower, it sits on a fog signal house and is pleasant enough, but the real appeal is the breakwater itself, a granite cribwork that stretches for close to a mile into Rockland Harbor. Put in place to protect the harbor from crashing waves, the breakwater was built across the span of 18 years, a massive undertaking that took close to 700,000 tons of the area’s famed granite. Walkers, anglers, photographers, hand-holding couples—everyone loves the result, as it affords a magnificent view of the city of Rockland, Penobscot Bay and its islands and tall schooners, and the Camden Hills in the distance. The light is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.

Address: 356 Main St.

Description: A favorite of grown-up visitors to Rockland, the Farnsworth hosts a few programs for kids, too. Most are art classes, in various disciplines, for various ages. An example might be Children’s Class: Drawing and Painting II, a series of classes designed to bring out the budding Wyeth in kids, teaching youngsters ages 10 through 12 the ways of the pencil and the brush. The museum also hosts afterschool programs for teens. Call or check the Web site for more information.
