2. Portland Breakwater Light

City: South Portland, ME
Category: Tours & Attractions
Address: Bug Light Park

Description: Called Bug Light affectionately by its neighbors, this short tower stands guard over the west side of Portland Harbor. It was built in 1855, and though it’s inactive today, it was restored in 1990 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The surrounding park is popular with walkers and Frisbee throwers and has a fine view of the harbor and the city of Portland.

3. Spring Point Ledge Light

City: South Portland, ME
Category: Tours & Attractions
Address: Broadway

Description: Not as well known as some of Maine’s sentinels, the Spring Point Ledge Light should be more popular. The 54-foot tower looks like a spark plug set down in Portland Harbor. A 1,000-foot breakwater connects the 1897 beacon to the mainland and invites walkers. The view of the city of Portland and the harbor from the tip is fantastic. If that isn’t enticement enough, the Spring Point Walkway, a very pleasant 3-mile greenway along Casco Bay, passes right nearby. The Portland Harbor Museum, a must-visit for people interested in maritime history, is a short walk away, too. The museum (207-799-6337; www.portlandharbormuseum.org) occasionally offers tours of the light in summer.
