Description: The historic Suburban World Theater was renovated into a one-screen cinema and restaurant. The menu includes the usual burgers and pizza as well as wraps, salads, tapas, and sandwiches, plus wine and beer—all served during shows.The Suburban World first opened in 1927 as the Granada Theatre. It was and is an example of Spanish-Moorish architecture, adorned with stucco facades of balconies, plants, and statues. The combination of the food and the architecture makes this an interesting place to see a revival or second-run film. The theater also hosts special television sports events, concerts, and live performances. Be sure to look up—that’s right, there’s a sky of glittering stars above your head when you’re sitting in the Suburban World.

Description: The Trylon, operated by nonprofit film society Take-Up Productions, opened in 2009 as one of the coolest ideas anyone in the Twin Cities has had in a while: Keep the space small and the overhead low, and you have a sustainable venue for showing classic films. The Trylon is now the most consistently programmed revival “house” (actually, it’s more like a room) in the Cities, with thoughtfully chosen series highlighting great filmmakers and beloved genres. The seating? Rocking chairs! Cool.

Description: The gigantic Brooklyn Center Stadium 20 theater megaplex offers stadium seating, high-back adjustable chairs, digital sound in all of its theaters, and, obviously, many film choices. Despite its size, Regal feels more comfortable due to its design, which includes larger individual theaters decorated with murals. The complex includes a cafe stocked with coffees and ice creams and a video arcade.

Description: The Big Ten Restaurant & Bar is a University of Minnesota institution, known both for good subs and for covering Minnesota Golden Gophers athletics. The Washington Avenue restaurant and bar is filled with memorabilia from Gophers sports; included are numerous autographed photos of triumphs in football, basketball, and hockey. For atmosphere alone, this is the place to catch a Gophers game, not to mention the beer and the excellent bar food.

Dubs is a popular place to watch Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball, football, and hockey games. The big-screen television and the cheap burgers and subs are also big draws.

Description: If you are looking for variety in domestic and imported beers, William’s is the place. This Uptown establishment boasts more than 300 different bottled beers from around the world, including Russia, Thailand, Africa, Finland, and Greece. An additional 70+ beers are on tap. William’s offers plenty of daily specials on domestic beers and appetizers. William’s is divided into a pub on the first floor and a more casual peanut bar in the basement. Things get raucous down there on weekend nights as the peanut shells pile up and the beers drain down—fights and makeout sessions often break out spontaneously, and sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.
