Address: 1 Twins Way

Description: Target Field, located on the west side of downtown Minneapolis, is the Twin Cities’ newest major athletic field: As this guide went to press, the Minnesota Twins were just preparing to play their 2010 season opener on its carefully watched grass after spending nearly three decades on Astroturf in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The lack of a roof (not even a retractable one) will be the first thing baseball fans notice about this new park, but it also happens to feature steeply raked seats designed to put spectators as close as possible to the action, as well as a massive scoreboard that will be the envy of the Major Leagues. People will surely find nits to pick when the field opens, but anticipation is high—and all signs are that the hype is justified.

20. University Of Minnesota—Twin Cities: Minneapolis Campus Civil And Mineral Engineering Building

City: Minneapolis, MN
Category: Tours & Attractions
Telephone: (612) 625-5522
Address: 500 Pillsbury Dr. SE

Description: Civil Engineering stands in stark contrast to the variations of classic architecture that dominate the campus. More than 95 percent of the building was constructed underground, and it extends 110 feet below the surface. Civil Engineering was planned during the OPEC oil embargo of 1974, when the building was simultaneously an architectural curiosity and a source for research into more efficient energy and land use. The Minnesota Legislature allocated funds for numerous experimental features in the structure, which was completed in 1983. Both active and passive solar heating are included for research purposes.

Description: Walter Library, which underwent a $63.4 million renovation between 1999 and 2002, is a building important in the history of the campus and the Twin Cities. Constructed in 1924, it was the university’s third principal library. The recent renovation included restoring the staircase, lobby, and reading rooms to their original glory, and creating spaces for the Digital Technology Center, the Science and Engineering Library, the Learning Resources Center, and the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute. The structure is built in the Roman Renaissance style, the dominant style of the campus’s architectural epicenter, Northrop Mall. Description: Not only is Our Lady of Lourdes the oldest standing church in Minneapolis, but it also has a simultaneously tumultuous and intriguing history.
