Description: One of the best ways to orient yourself to Branson and Table Rock Lake all in one shot is aboard a Duck. These World War II–era amphibious vehicles, originally called DUKWs by the military, have been modified to accommodate sightseers on an 80-minute land-and-lake adventure. From the time you leave the home base, next to Wal-Mart on The Strip, to the time you splash down in Table Rock, your U.S. Coast Guard–approved captain booms across the loudspeaker, pointing out interesting places and scenery along the way. He’ll even throw in a joke or two and some fun facts about the history of Branson you may not hear anywhere else. The Duck route takes passengers along The Strip, down MO 165 past Table Rock Dam and the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery, and atop Baird Mountain, the area’s highest peak, where you can get a magnificent view of Table Rock Lake. The captain will even treat you to a look at the Ducks’ own outdoor museum of vintage military vehicles. From there it’s splashdown time. The captain may let you try your hand at the wheel as you cruise by the Showboat Branson Belle. If you make it to the driver’s seat, you’ll get a nifty-looking honorary captain’s license. Each passenger receives a free wacky quacker with each ticket purchase. These yellow plastic duck-lip spit collectors make a rather obnoxious noise when you blow into them, sort of a whiney quack. If you have kids and want any peace at all during the trip home, you may want to pack the quackers in the trunk. There’s a Lake Taneycomo and downtown Branson trip available, too. Tickets for both versions are $20 plus tax for adults and $12 for children 3 to 12. Ages two and younger ride for free. Ride the Ducks is open March through December from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. During the busy summer months, the hours are extended. Tours depart every 15 minutes or so, and reservations are not required.
