Education - Education And Child Care
Travel in the Ozarks prior to graded roads and paved highways was difficult and slow even in the best of weather, but area residents and the U.S. Postal Service took it in stride. How is this for service that neither rain nor sleet nor gloom of night (and we could add bad roads) affects? Teacher Lizzie Johnson, who lived at Forsyth and taught school at Reuter, a distance of 14 miles, wrote home on a one-cent postcard, postmarked November 12, 1908: “I would like to come home Saturday, but don’t think I can get a horse. I thought if papa would send old Prince by the mail carrier Friday, I could come home Saturday and return Sunday, then he could lead the horse back home on Monday.” (Quoted in Elmo Ingentron, The Land of Taney, The Ozarks Mountaineer Press, 1974.)
