Description: The Old Cathedral was St. Louis’s earliest church and the first Catholic cathedral west of the Mississippi River. The Old Cathedral Museum, located on the west side of the cathedral, contains many religious artifacts and relics from the early days of the Catholic Church in the city, as well as historical information. The first Catholic church in St. Louis was built on this site in 1770, and the original church bell can be seen in the museum. The present structure is more than 160 years old and has been declared a national monument. The cathedral conducts daily mass and is a popular spot for weddings.

Description: Tours of Grant’s former home include the two-story house, a stone summer kitchen, icehouse, barn, and chicken house. A visitor center is located in the barn, complete with a number of exhibits about Ulysses and his wife, Julia, a St. Louis native. The center also includes information about the White Haven site and a library with books and other Grant-related items for sale. During the holiday season, the site is decked out in traditional 1850s Christmas decorations and features activities such as caroling, antebellum dancing, and craft making.

Description: The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, located in beautiful Queeny Park, is home to the world’s finest collection of canine art. The 14,000-square-foot facility includes the historic Jarville House, built in 1853, and displays more than 500 original paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, sculptures, and a variety of decorative art objects. There are special exhibits and educational programs as well. The museum is open year-round, but oddly enough, no dogs are allowed in the house. The museum’s gift shop offers a variety of gift items for you and your canine companion, including tapestry pillows, ceramic and jeweled dog dishes, books, jewelry, and some one-of-a-kind objects—just like Fido himself. Closed Monday and holidays.

Description: One of the major sculpture parks in the country, Laumeier offers year-round exhibitions of modern and contemporary sculpture and installations, as well as drawings, paintings, ceramics, and photography. The museum draws internationally known sculptors and artists to the region to create and install their work, both indoors and outdoors. The pieces represent current and unique approaches to art in a natural environment. Laumeier hosts various special events throughout the year, including the annual three-day Laumeier Art Fair, which takes place during Mother’s Day weekend. Visitors can rent iPods and take an audio tour that highlights more than 20 sculptures, with additional works to be added on a regular basis. Closed Monday.
