Description: El Museo Latino has the distinction of being the first museum of its kind in the Midwest. Its collection and traveling exhibits focus on Latino culture in all its forms, including visual art, dance, music, and tradition. The museum offers almost all its programs in both Spanish and English, and it’s located in the heart of the city’s Latino District, just west of South 24th Street. The museum makes creative use of an old school building, and has renovated the space into a series of galleries and performance spaces. It uses the classrooms for their original purpose and presents workshops, classes, and demonstrations. Performances from the CHOMARI Ballet Folklorico Mexicano are a highlight on El Museo Latino’s schedule. During late October and early November, the museum celebrates Dia De Los Muertos, or the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, with a wide array of events and an exhibition that always includes an authentic “Ofrenda,” which is an altar designed to honor the departed.
