Description: A memorial to the late civil rights Leader Malcom X has long been the goal of the foundation formed in his name. Malcom X was born in 1925 in the heart of North Omaha; his birth home, located at 34th and Pinkney, has long since been razed. Omahan Rowena Moore’s family owned five lots in North Omaha, including the one of Malcom X’s birth home, and she single-handedly formed the Malcom X Foundation in 1971, saving her own money to stage events commemorating his birth and death. The foundation incorporated in 1983 and it placed a historical marker at the birth site in 1987. That same year, with the support of Malcom X’s family, the foundation bought 10 acres of land around the birth site.Today, the foundation is actively fundraising to construct a memorial at the site of the birth home, and to buy a building adjacent to the birth site that would be home to the International Headquarters and Visiting Center for the Foundation. It would be the first facility to house all of the foundation’s operations in more than 30 years.
