Description: Established in 1797, this is the premier hotel in town. When you enter the lobby, the rich woods and deep pile carpets give you a good feel for the hotel’s quiet elegance. Sitting on the square, its six floors contain 119 guest rooms and suites that are outfitted with Civil War–period furnishings, and the hotel staff dressed in period costume completes your transformation to the days of the past. The name of the hotel’s restaurant—Centuries on the Square—says it all. Here you can enjoy casual fine dining daily (see the Restaurants chapter). There’s also a historic English pub on-site—McClellan’s Tavern, which has a turn-of-the-century mahogany Van Tromp Bar imported from Brick Lane in England. The Gettysburg Hotel is featured on the Historic Gettysburg Walking Tour (see the Attractions chapter), and it’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and on the Historic Hotels of America for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. All the amenities you would expect to find are here. In addition, there’s room service from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., babysitting and dry-cleaning services and in-room movies are available, and local calls are free if they’re less than 30 minutes long. You’ll also have free high-speed Internet access, free transportation to the battlefield bus tour, complimentary afternoon tea, and turndown service. Two-room family units are available, children younger than age 17 stay free in the room with a paying adult, and fireplaces and Jacuzzi baths grace the hotel’s suites.
