Eisenhower ‘50S Weekend - Annual Events & Festivals - Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

City: Gettysburg, PA
Category: Annual Events & Festivals
Telephone: (717) 338-9114

Description: This weekend program revisits the 1950s—the clothes, the fads, the cars, and more serious topics, such as the Cold War. This look into the past is included in the admission to the site, which includes a tour of the grounds, the farm, and the house. The site has been preserved as it was when the Eisenhowers lived here during Ike’s presidency and his retirement. (For more on the Eisenhower National Historic Site, see the Attractions chapter.) During the weekend, ranger programs revisit the issues of the 1950s and the President Eisenhower era. Topics might include the Civil Rights Movement, the protection of the president, the Nike missile program, which had missiles positioned to protect major U.S. cities from nuclear attack, and the relationship between President Eisenhower and Soviet leader Khrushchev.
