Today it is a 99-bed acute- and emergency-care facility run by WellSpan Health, a community-based, not-for-profit organization that has more than 40 locations providing health and wellness services in south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. The hospital is located southwest of the square, surrounded by neighborhoods and the Recreational Park on Long Lane. The grounds include a medical building and the Gettysburg Hospital Heart Center, which offers patients cutting-edge diagnostics, access to state-of-the-art treatment, and comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation. The heart center also has a program that’s especially designed to address the unique needs of women with heart-related health issues. Besides acute care and heart care, Gettysburg Hospital also provides the area’s only Transitional Care Center, a Medicare-certified skilled nursing facility for patients who have been discharged from the hospital but are not quite well enough to go home on their own. Residents in the 19-bed center receive a number of medical and rehabilitative services to help them return to an independent lifestyle as quickly as possible. The Transitional Care Center also provides adult respite care on a short-term (3 to 13 days) basis. Gettysburg Hospital Rehab offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services that provide treatment, exercise, and education for injuries and functional impairment. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy are offered. Inpatient and outpatient care is given within the hospital, while the WellSpan Health Center on Chambersburg Road offers only outpatient care. This center at Herr’s Ridge features a warm-water aquatic therapy pool and certified aquatic therapist. A sleep disorders lab is also housed at Gettysburg Hospital. It consists of two patient-friendly sleep rooms with bathroom and shower and a dedicated control room. More information on the sleep lab is available at (717) 337-4482. The hospital is justly proud of its maternity center, where you can choose to have a physician or a midwife deliver your baby. Childbirth classes and sibling-preparation programs are also offered, and family members can view a picture of your new baby at the hospital Web site’s online nursery. The hospital is well equipped for visitors also, with a cafeteria on the ground floor that’s open till 6:15 p.m. and a snack bar and gift shop located just off the main lobby that’s open till 7:00 p.m. With the exception of Pediatrics and Maternity, children younger than 12 years of age are not permitted to visit unless special permission is given from the patient’s physician.
