Description: Gettysburg Campground is located on Marsh Creek, the western boundary during the Battle of Gettysburg. It’s also located adjacent to the Black Horse Tavern, a historic landmark that was used as an inn and hospital during the Civil War years. In June you can be transported back to those days as you observe Civil War reenactors camping on the grounds. Open April through November, the campground has 260 sites and offers RV repairs on-site. While staying here, you’re a mere 10 miles from the South Mountain Fairgrounds, home of the South Mountain Fair and the National Apple Harvest Festival (see the Annual Events and Festivals chapter). There’s also a daily shuttle bus to downtown Gettysburg during the summer. When you want to relax at the campground, you can enjoy the ice-cream parlor or take in a movie. For those who want more activity, there’s a ball field, shuffleboard, minigolf, creek stocked with fish (no license required), volleyball, and horseshoes available. Planned weekend activities such as a sock hop, a night of ghost stories, a fishing contest, or a crab feast are sure to round out your stay. All sites have a picnic table and a fire ring. A site without hookups is $32 a night or $192 a week; a site with water and electric is $37 a night or $222 a week. Having a site with water, electric, and sewer will run you $39 a night or $234 a week, and if you want 50-amp electric, there’s a $4 fee per day. Rates are for four people at one camping site. There are also two cabins and two cottages available for rent. Outside of each is a picnic table and a fire ring for cooking, and you supply your own linens. The cabins are $67 per night and they have one full-size bed and one set of bunk beds in one room, a small refrigerator, a small table with two stools, and heat. The cottages rent for $135 per night. One cottage has a full-size bed and the other has a queen-size bed. Both cottages have heat, air-conditioning, two sets of bunk beds in a separate room, full private bathroom with shower, a table and chairs, refrigerator, stove top, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, dishes, pots and pans, and utensils.
