Description: Granite Hill sits on a farm that was granted from Penn’s Charter in the late eighteenth century and was called the Drais Farm. The owner at the time of the Battle of Gettysburg was Felix Drais, who was wounded while fighting in the Wheatfield on July 2. The bank barn that sits on the property was used to shelter wounded soldiers during the battle, and General Lee’s retreat on July 4 passed directly by Granite Hill on what is now Route 116. The Drais Farm became the property of the Cornett family in 1972 and is the only Gettysburg Civil War farm to become an RV park. In 2008 the farmhouse was converted into a four-bedroom bed-and-breakfast (see the Bed-and-Breakfasts and Guesthouses chapter).Open April through October, the campground has 300 sites on 150 acres of woodlands, meadows, and rolling hills, where you can camp in your own RV or tent or stay in one of their rustic cabins. This is the site of the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festivals, which are held in May and August (see the Annual Events and Festivals chapter). Adventure Golf is an 18-hole state-of-the-art minigolf course sculpted from a stone mountain overlooking the campground’s Bass Lake (for more on the Adventure Golf, see the Kidstuff chapter). The golf is challenging, fun for kids and adults, and open to the public. Kayaks and paddleboats are also available for rent at Bass Lake, and there’s a trout pond for fishing (no license required). Shuffleboard, tennis, softball, horseshoes, volleyball, and basketball add to your recreational choices, and there’s also a snack bar available for when you need to refuel. Wireless Internet service is available, and planned weekend activities run the gamut from hayrides to a trout derby to ice-cream socials and hoedowns to pig roasts. A site without any hookups is $29 a night or $143 a week, and one with water and electric runs $34 a night or $175 a week. A site with water, electric, and sewer costs $37 a night or $192 a week. Rates are for two people at one camping site. There is also a two-room cabin available that rents for $71 a night or $400 a week. It has one double bed and two sets of bunk beds and comes equipped with a heater, fan, picnic table, and outdoor grill.
