East Cooper Regional Medical Center has 130 beds and about 560 employees. The hospital moved to a larger, 250,000-square-foot facility in 2010, doubling the size of the previous center on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard in operation since 1986 . The hospital (formerly called East Cooper Community Hospital) provides inpatient acute care and 24-hour emergency room services. 13. Mount Pleasant Hospital

Description: Opened in 2010, this $180 million facility is Roper St. Francis Healthcare’s answer to the population growth (up 58 percent in the 2000 census) in Mount Pleasant, one of the fastest growing cities in South Carolina. The 85-bed hospital encompasses 219,000 square feet and is located on 78 acres, 38 of which are protected woodlands and wetlands, creating a natural and potentially healing environment. The hospital offers inpatient and outpatient surgery, a 24-hour emergency room, an intensive care unit, medical-surgical units, and home-like labor and delivery suites. Imaging services, a laboratory, and a pharmacy are on-site as well as a medical office building housing doctors of a variety of specialties. A helipad is also available for ease of transportation.

Description: A part of the Trident Health System, these facilities offer a freestanding, comprehensive occupational medicine program serving more than 300 employers in Berkeley, Dorchester, and Charleston Counties since 1980. Services include post-offer physical examinations (when a prospective employee has been offered a job by a business pending the outcome of a physical exam), work injury treatment, drug and alcohol testing, and occupational injury and illness prevention programs. 15. HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital—Charleston

The full-service, 46-bed acute rehabilitation hospital spans patient care from injury or illness to maximum independence and function. The center’s stated mission is “getting people back . . . to work . . . to play . . . to living.” It is the only freestanding rehabilitation hospital in the Lowcountry and is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
