Description: Spectator tennis took a major leap forward in the Charleston area with the announcement of a relocation of the Family Circle Cup to our city in 2001 after a long-time run in Hilton Head, South Carolina. As many as 100,000 tennis fans have attended the nine-day Women’s Tennis Association Tier I event. A $9 million tennis complex for the tournament was built within the new Town Centre Park in the planned community of Daniel Island. It served up an inaugural venue for this competition that attracts many of the top seeds in women’s tennis. Some of the past competitors were Justine Henin-Hardenne, Conchita Martinez, Monica Seles, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Mary Pierce, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, and Jennifer Capriati. Held in early Apr, the Family Circle Cup is a hot ticket in Charleston’s busy spring tourism events. Ticket prices range from $15 for qualifying matches up to $55 for the finals.
