Description: Set on the northeast edge of the park, Cosby campground is 2 miles off of East Parkway (US 321N), about 20 miles east of Gatlinburg. You’ll find a picnic area, a 1-mile self-guided nature trail, an amphitheater for ranger programs in-season, and the trailheads for several hiking trails here, including hikes to Hen Wallow Falls and rare old-growth forest. Cosby campground is open from mid-March through October and has 165 campsites. Site rental is $14, and RV length is restricted to 25 feet. Group sites for eight to 20 people are available by reservation only and cost $26.

7. Look Rock Campground

Description: The Foothills Parkway runs outside of the western border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park; the section where Look Rock Campground is located is accessible only off TN 73, about 10 miles west of Townsend. At an elevation of 2,600 feet, the Look Rock Campground is the highest in the Tennessee side of the park. Look Rock is open mid-May to October 31 and has 68 sites. Site rental is $14, and RV length is not limited.

8. Abrams Creek Campground

Description: Remember the old line, “You can’t get there from here?” Well, here it is. Abrams Creek Campground is on the extreme western edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, convenient to nowhere and accessible only by taking Happy Valley Road off U.S. Highway 129, some 30 miles south of Maryville, which is about 15 miles west of Townsend. The campground is open from mid-March to October 31 and has 16 campsites. Site rental is $14 per night, and RV length is restricted to 12 feet.

9. Big Creek Campground

Description: The Big Creek area is about 6 miles south of exit 451 on Interstate 40, right at the Tennessee–North Carolina border. The campground is in a valley surrounded by woods. No RVs are allowed in this 12-site enclave, which is open from mid-March to October 31. Campsite rental is $14 a night.

10. Cataloochee Campground

Description: Way deep in the woods and way up in the mountains, Cataloochee Campground really requires a map to find. The Great Smoky Mountains Trail Map ($1 at any visitor center) will show the unnamed roads that lead to the campground at location D-11. Cataloochee is 2,610 feet up in the mountains, with 27 available campsites. Open from mid-March to October 31, campsites at Cataloochee are $17. RV length is restricted to 31 feet.

11. Balsam Mountain Campground

Description: If you like the idea of going to Cataloochee, you’ll love Balsam Mountain. This campground, at 5,310 feet in elevation, is the highest campground accessible to vehicles in the park. The 46 campsites are open from mid-May to mid-October, and RV length is restricted to 30 feet. Campsite rental is $14 a night. To get there, take the Blue Ridge Parkway north from Newfound Gap Road (US 441) about 12 miles to Heintooga Ridge Road on the left. Don’t worry about missing Heintooga Ridge Road—it’s the first road you’ll come to. Turn left and follow the road into Balsam Mountain, about 8 miles.

12. Deep Creek Campground

Description: This one’s also pretty remote from the Tennessee side, but it’s convenient to the Fontana resort area. The best way to get there is off U.S. Highway 19, about 3 miles east of Bryson City or 20 miles west of Cherokee. Deep Creek has 92 campsites, many of which are for tent camping only. The campground is open from early April until October 31 and has a 26-foot trailer length limit. All campsites are $17 a night.
