Insider Pick:

Description: It’s all Greek to Houston for 4 days at the beginning of October. That’s when the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral complex hosts The Original Greek Festival—not to be confused with the smaller Greek festival held in Clear Lake in May. Highlights include cathedral tours, Greek folk dancing, and the Athenian Playground, where kids play and enjoy crafts and other activities. But the biggest draw is the food, including souvlaki, Greek salad, gyros, and other Greek food and pastries made by the cathedral’s parishioners using generations-old recipes. Admission costs $5; kids 12 and under get in free. Food isn’t included in the price of admission. But some advance planning and $20 will get you a presale ticket, which includes admission and a dinner plate. Visit the cathedral in advance or call to order presale tickets. There’s no parking at the complex, but limited parking is available on the street. Just watch for the No Parking signs around the area. Your safest bet is to park at Lamar High School (3325 Westheimer, between Westheimer and West Alabama and between Buffalo Speedway and Kirby), and take the free shuttle.
