Annual Events & Festivals - Houston, Texas

Annual Events & Festivals - Annual Events

Thanks to the hundreds of events held in Houston each year, you can always find something to do here. These events—many of them held year after year—are as diverse as the people of Houston themselves: There are car and boat shows, air shows, a marathon and other races, art events, cultural heritage celebrations, holiday events, food festivals, music festivals, shopping extravaganzas, the world’s largest livestock show and rodeo, and even an art car parade.

Overview

Unfortunately, it would take several volumes to list all of the events that take place in and around Houston each year. So this chapter offers a sampling of some of the city’s largest and quirkiest annual happenings. With a few exceptions, the events listed here are held in Houston. Many take place at downtown venues such as Discovery Green, the George R. Brown Convention Center, and Sam Houston Park; others are held in Hermann Park or Reliant Park. Some require venturing outside the city limits, though. These have been included because they draw so many people from Houston and the surrounding areas.

Almost all the events listed here are family friendly, and many offer special activities for kids.

Some events, such as the Ice at Discovery Green, begin in one month and end in another. These have been listed under the month in which they begin. Likewise, a Hanukkah event is listed in December, even though the holiday—and the corresponding event—occasionally falls at the end of November.

Events listed here are wheelchair accessible unless indicated otherwise. Call ahead and double-check, though, since some events change venues or accessibility offerings. The contact information provided here is for the event organizers. With a couple of noted exceptions, I’ve included the event location’s street address.

Description: If you like a great symphony, fireworks, and money in your wallet, Miller Outdoor Theatre might be more your Fourth of July scene than Eleanor Tinsley Park. Each year thousands of Houstonians sit outside on blankets and lawn chairs and celebrate Independence Day with a night of all-American tunes performed by the Houston Symphony. Among the highlights: a rousing performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and a 16-cannon salute. The patriotic evening wraps up with a vibrant fireworks display. Admission is free. Refreshments and drinks are available for purchase, but it’s even more fun to pack a picnic. Sit near the top of the hill and you might even steal a glimpse of the Freedom Over Texas fireworks display.

12. Qfest

City: Houston, TX
Category: Annual Events & Festivals

Description: One of Houston’s hottest gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered cultural events takes place in late September. Originally, the event was known as the Houston Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival. But the name was changed to QFest in 2007 to reflect the festival’s commitment not just to film but also to art and music. Despite the name change, the festival remains best known for showcasing full-length movies and shorts promoting sexual diversity and the work of LGBT and female filmmakers. Most films are screened at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Rice Media Center, or Discovery Green. Tickets cost $10 per movie for adults. Museum members and guests 65 and older get in for $8. Tickets are available through the QFest website or at the museum.

Many of them get their first exposure to Shakespeare through the festival, and many are repeat guests, some bringing along a picnic to eat before or during the performance. Whether you choose to bring a picnic, buy food on-site, or eat beforehand, be sure to bring blankets to sit on since the grass can be moist. The festival is free.
