Description: The main campus of Prairie View A&M—a member of the Texas A&M University system—is located in a small town northwest of Houston, but the College of Nursing makes its home in the Texas Medical Center. Currently, the College of Nursing is expanding its programs and facilities to give students and professors even better research and learning opportunities. Undergrads must first complete their basic science/prenursing requirements on the main campus or another university, then transfer to the College of Nursing. Graduate students may pursue degrees that will allow them to work as family nurse practitioners, nursing administrators, or nursing educators. An historically black university, Prairie View A&M was the first university west of the Mississippi River to admit black students to nursing school when the College of Nursing opened in 1918. Today the student body is still predominately black, but the College of Nursing’s 8,000 students also represent a number of other racial and ethnic backgrounds. College of Nursing students pay Prairie View A&M tuition rates, which are relatively low and are determined by the number of credit hours a student takes. Undergrads pay about $23,600 per year for tuition, room and board, and other fees; graduate students pay about $21,600 per year.
