Description: Located about 30 miles southwest of Houston in Needville, Brazos Bend State Park is a big hit among outdoor enthusiasts. Opened by the state in 1984, this 5,000-acre oasis runs along the Brazos River, which was used to transport cotton and for other commerce in the 1800s. The park’s history appears to go back much further, though: Artifacts found here suggest that people have been visiting Brazos Bend State Park for thousands of years. The park’s Brazos River location makes for plenty of camping and fishing opportunities—as well as occasional alligator and freshwater snake sightings. The expansive park is also lined with wooded hiking and biking trails, including the Creekfield Lake Nature Trail, where you can see and learn about different wetlands creatures from interpretive panels. On weekends, the park offers free guided hikes. Visit the Nature Center to participate in an upcoming hike. While you’re there, check out the Habits and Niches display, where you can touch and learn more about local wildlife. General admission to the park is $7; it’s $5 per day if you’re camping overnight. Kids 12 and under get in free. Camping fees range from $7 to $25 per night for individuals and families, depending on how primitive the campsite is.
