Description: In the 1800s, life in Houston revolved around Market Square Park, which was originally used as an open-air produce market after Augustus Allen donated the land to the city. Over the years, the park became the site of several City Halls, the last of which was demolished in the 1960s. In August 2010, Market Square Park reopened, again making its mark as a gathering place for Houstonians and their four-legged friends. This downtown park charms Houstonians with its beautiful mosaic benches, a 25-foot painted steel and wood sculpture by artist James Surls, historic photographs and elements from Market Square’s early days, an attractive dog park, as well as Lauren’s Garden, dedicated to the memory of Houstonian Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, who died aboard Flight 93 on September 11, 2011. One of the biggest draws is the kiosk for Niko Nikos, where you can buy delicious baklava, wine, falafel, and other Greek treats to eat in the park. Special events, including movie screenings hosted by the Alamo Drafthouse, are held here throughout the year; visit the website to learn about upcoming events.Parking is usually available on the streets around the park. There’s additional parking in Market Square Garage at 300 Milam.
