Description: As its name suggests, this downtown Theater District park was established to celebrate the 150th birthday of both Houston and Texas in 1986. Sesquicentennial Park runs along Buffalo Bayou, and though it’s less of a recreation destination than most other local parks, it’s worth a visit if you have extra time downtown. A peaceful sanctuary in the midst of the city, the 22.5-acre park is filled with grassy slopes for afternoon picnics and frolicking, as well as bridges, cascading waterfalls, meandering sidewalks, native plants, natural water pools, and spectacular views of downtown. Those in need of a quiet space to contemplate can gaze out on Buffalo Bayou and watch canoers and kayakers paddle by or stop at the park. Art lover? You’ll appreciate Dean Ruck’s photographic display on the railings overlooking Buffalo Bayou, as well as the “seven wonders.” Each of the seven wonders is a 70-foot-tall pillar featuring 150 children’s drawings that illustrate the city’s history of agriculture, energy, medicine, transportation, manufacturing, philanthropy, and technology. Sesquicentennial Park’s beauty makes it a popular place for weddings, special events, and photo shoots. Many downtown events are also held here throughout the year. Parking is available in the Theater District parking garages; the most convenient is garage number 8. Parking costs up to $9 during the week and $7 for special events and on weekends.
