Description: The Carver Academy opened just east of downtown in the fall of 2001 as the dream of David Robinson, retired center for the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson pledged $9 million of his own money to start this 501(c)(3) school, which is designed to serve elementary-­age students from a culturally diverse community. Description: Given San Antonio’s strong ties to the Catholic Church, it’s not surprising that the city and the surrounding areas are home to numerous Catholic schools. The Archdiocese of San Antonio runs 30 elementary and 12 secondary schools.
