Description: This Wallingford store is a one-stop location for gifts, party supplies, crafts, costumes, oddities, and the weirdest collection of toys and candy you’ve ever seen. A mecca for connoisseurs of the strange, Archie’s is reminiscent of a carnival sideshow. If you find yourself in need of a rubber chicken, punching nun, 8-foot tall gladiator, or pickle lip balm, this is the place to come. Most of the 10,000-plus items are priced less than $15.

Description: Despite the fact that this store’s name sounds like it contains X-rated paraphernalia for adults, in fact its selection is mostly for babies and children: eco-conscious clothing, natural and wooden toys, baby supplies including organic diapers, and a great line of locally screen-printed T-shirts. There is also some clothing for women and men as well, and a small selection of vintage and consignment items. Most things are modern and offbeat, making it a fun place to browse.

Description: This quaint Ballard shop is filled with wooden toys, stuffed animals, dolls, puppets, and baby clothes. It has a warm European feel, housed in a pretty century-old building. There’s also a really nice selection of room decor accessories, featuring unique locally made items such as heirloom quilts by Rebecca Hewitt and original paintings and vintage reproductions by Seattle artists Matthew Porter and Molly Brett.

Description: The 92-acre Woodland Park Zoo is one of the oldest zoos on the West Coast, and it houses the largest live animal collection in Washington state. More than 300 species are represented here, and Woodland Park has won five major exhibit awards. The grounds and displays are divided into different bioclimatic zones, from tropical rain forests to coastal deserts. There is an animal contact farm, Zoomazium play space for toddlers to eight-year-olds, a historic 1918 carousel, bug world, and an African village re-creation. The zoo is open 364 days a year (closed only on Christmas); parking is available for an extra charge. While you’re here, you may want to check out the Rose Garden, 2.5 gorgeous acres with no admission charge.
