Description: This chain of resorts goes with an African theme on the decor and piped in music. Everything all together is the idea here: water park, hotel room, spa, shopping, and dining. At 125,000 square feet, the indoor park is second in the nation in size to its sister resort in Ohio. The outdoor portion opens for the summer, and both parks offer private cabanas with flat-screen TVs, a safe, lounge chairs, and a refrigerator.

Description: Noah’s Ark has long been a formidable competitor in the water park scene and has a few of those “greatest” claims to fame: America’s longest water coaster, world’s largest bowl ride, and the only 4-D theater, which features none other than SpongeBob SquarePants. Scorpion Tail is the nation’s only looping water slide. Forty-nine water slides, two wave pools and lazy rivers, four kids’ areas, and a variety of dry land activities to boot. Annually raising the bar, they remain one of the kings of the scene. Season passes are incredible deals for water park junkies. A single day pass is around $35.

Description: It’s not often one gets to ride in an amphibious World War II army vehicle. These “ducks” were first brought to the Dells in 1946 by Mel Flath. They barrel along through the woods and then splash into the Lower Dells offering the best scenery of land and water. Be prepared to get a little wet.

Description: The resort offers canoe, kayak, and tube rentals for those who prefer Mother Nature’s water park. The Wisconsin River is a beautiful place to paddle, and the carved sandstone is a good reason to bring a waterproof camera. Trips last from about an hour and a half up to five to seven hours, with overnight options as well. The resort runs a shuttle or you can paddle independently. Prices start from about $30.

Description: Rick has been doing magic since he was 10. He and his wife/assistant Susan have been around the world with their act and featured in places such as Las Vegas and London. His specialty is up-close performance and this 550-seat theater, which the Wilcoxes opened in 1999, works well for him. Shows are an hour and a half long and appropriate fun for all ages. The Wilcoxes are available after the show for photos and autographs, and the gift shop sells great stuff for the aspiring magician. Fee.

Description: Ripley’s has capitalized on the bizarre and this museum of eight galleries spread across two floors delivers as expected. From shrunken heads and torture devices to mutant animals and unaired episodes of the TV show, there are plenty of oddities. The dimly lit halls offer placards for all displays so visitors know what they are looking at. Be aware that some of the weird stuff may scare small children. Open daily from Mar into Oct and then with limited days for the rest of the year. Fee.

Description: Though the state is actually crawling with deer and you are sure to see some by the roadside—standing or otherwise—it is not often one has the chance to pet one. The deer park offers a four-block-long pathway in a wooded 28-acre preserve. The animals, which have been born and raised in captivity, come right up to the visitors. Other animals occupy the park, from the familiar such as elk and bison, to the more exotic, such as lemurs and emus. Feed specially formulated for the animals must be purchased at the site. Adult entrance fees are $10. Open May through Oct. Wheelchair accessible.

Description: Located on the 2nd floor overlooking the street, the cafe consistently gets raves from locals and travelers alike. In the glut and glitz world of a tourist mecca, this is a fine example of keeping quality at a premium. Soups, salads, appetizers, wraps—the menu is American and represents the traveling “research” of the two owners’ quest for the best recipes from around the country. Starters may include hummus, crabcakes, or ahi tuna. Salads don’t use iceberg lettuce, pastas and sandwiches are creative, and dinner entrees are varied from prime rib to chicken piccata but include a Friday Fish Fry. Open for lunch and dinner, closed Mon. Prices for most items are under $10, while dinner entrees stay under $20.

Description: With a big moose sprawled on the roof of the delivery car, you can’t miss this place. Decorated as a northwoods lodge and showcasing a copper brew system, Moosejaw has appeal for the eyes as well as the appetite. The beer here is all brewed on site and uses locally grown hops.
