Description: This district—the state’s seventh largest—encompasses all kinds of neighborhoods, from low-income housing to multimillion-dollar hillside homes. Description: This district of about 26,000 students celebrated its centennial in 1996. It enjoys a good reputation, although you may find newer schools in the growth areas of north Scottsdale are at an advantage in facilities and programs over older schools in south Scottsdale. The district incorporates Paradise Valley, most of Scottsdale, and portions of Tempe and east Phoenix. It has 16 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 5 high schools, 3 K–8 schools, and one alternative school. One of the elementary schools is a “learning center,” where the emphases are on hands-on learning, whole-language reading, and cross-grade classrooms in a multicultural environment. Another elementary school focuses on back-to-basics instruction.
