Description: Heritage Square appears to be a small Western town wedged into the foothills, with porticoed boardwalks along the front of retail stores, restaurants, and entertainment options lining its streets. They include an alpine slide on the hillside, an operating train, amusement rides, miniature golf, and a variety of vendors. The Heritage Square Music Hall offers melodramas, a dinner theater, and a children’s theater. Rides operate weekends in the spring and fall, and daily during the summer months.

Description: Lakeside is an old-­fashioned park that has changed little since the 1940s. Little trains that run around the lake are sentimental favorites of past generations. The extensive kiddieland has 15 rides sized for the tots, while the Cyclone Roller Coaster and 39 other rides entertain the rest of the family. It opens weekends in May, goes full-­time in June, and closes after Labor Day weekend.

Description: The Denver Puppet Theater is a delightful experience for kids ages 3 and older. With six different plays performed each year—classics, world stories, new plays—kids can come back every 2 months for a new show. Marionettes and shadow puppets make up the characters, and visitors can see all the puppets after each performance. (No autographs, however.) Performances are on Thursday through Sunday from September to May, and Wednesday through Saturday during the summer.

Description: If you’re up for a drive or heading in that direction anyway, this is the biggest, most comprehensive children’s museum around. It features a stunning variety of laboratories, interactive displays, a miniature grocery store where youngsters can shop or act as cashiers, and a terrific toddler area. You’ll find this museum open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free for kids younger than age one; $5.50 for seniors and $7.50 for all other ages.

Description: Today, visitors to the Denver Zoo can view almost 4,000 different animals, representing 700 species. The naturalistic habitats Predator Ridge, Tropical Discovery, Dragons of Komodo, and Primate Extravaganza enhance the lives of some of the world’s endangered species. The zoo is open every day of the year. Zoo hours from November 1 through March 31 are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and hours from April 1 through October 31 are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission from April through September is $12 for adults, $9 for seniors, and $7 for children ages 3 through 11; children younger than age 3 are admitted for free. From November through March the admission is reduced by $2 for seniors and kids and $3 for adults. Call for free days for Colorado residents. The zoo’s cafeteria serves light meals and snacks.
