Insider Pick:

Description: If Frank Pepe’s pizza restaurant did not exist, this would be the most famous pizza in Connecticut. Many say it is the best. Waiting in line outside under the classic sign is an experience everyone in Connecticut must have, and you can peer down the block to Pepe’s to see which line is longer. The prices are cheap, and the gourmet bacon or anchovy pizzas are unbelievable at any price. As a family operation run by the Consiglios, Sally’s (short for Salvatore) has been in business since 1938, and stepping into their dining room is a step back in time. Sadly for pizza in America, perhaps, no one has ever improved on their formula. Frank Sinatra used to have his driver come all the way from New York to pick up a few of Sally’s pizzas. Taste them and you’ll find out why.

25. Claire’S Corner Copia

City: New Haven, CT
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (203) 562-3888
Address: 1000 Chapel St.

Description: Opened in 1975, Claire’s Corner Copia has been a favorite for locals, visitors, and downtown lunch-goers for its vegetarian, vegan, organic, and kosher offerings. Claire Criscuolo, chef and owner, is a registered nurse and focuses not just on health, but also on flavor. Come in and check out the huge daily menu or browse the glass-fronted display cases. Try one of her vegetarian lasagnas, sandwiches, chilis, or quesadillas. This is not a table-service restaurant, but the quality of the food is far above the usual run of self-service order and pick up places. Don’t forget to get dessert, and perhaps take home a loaf of the amazing bread or the award-winning coffee cake.
