Description: This Tony-award-winning, nonprofit regional theater opened in 1965 with Connecticutian Arthur Miller’s opening of The Crucible. Ever since it has been one of four (or more) excellent theaters in New Haven, even though it is situated in a food terminal away from the center of town. They have both traditional and experimental plays here, have won Pulitzers for their original plays, and bring in Hollywood actors like Al Pacino, Kathleen Turner, and Kevin Spacey. Long Wharf also hosts jazz concerts and other shows on “stage 2,” a cement-block (and yet still somehow charming) theater next to the main stage. The main stage is surrounded on three sides by seating, so you’ll have a good view of the action from wherever you sit, but try for a few rows back in sections C or E.

Insider Pick:

Description: The Yale Repertory Theater consistently produces world-premiere plays and interesting adaptations of classic drama. Housed at the corner of Chapel and York Streets, the theater was once the Calvary Baptist Church, and the building’s Gothic Revival architecture dates from 1846. Award-winning and up-and-coming playwrights join exceptional directors, designers, and actors for dynamic performances. Plays that begin at the theater often move on to Broadway, and such productions have been nominated for more than 40 Tony Awards. The Yale Center for New Theatre, established in 2008, has worked closely with new Repertory productions and for theaters across the country. Notable past productions include Death of a Salesman, Notes from the Underground, and The Piano Lesson.
