Description: The Columbia River Maritime Museum is a 37,000- square-foot facility that celebrates the seafaring history of the Astoria area. The museum has seven galleries that include displays about the history of the salmon-packing industry, specifics on different types of boat design, and artifacts from the Peter Iredale shipwreck that occurred near the mouth of the Columbia in 1906. The museum is located at the edge of the scenic Columbia River and also has a dock where you can tour the lightship Columbia—a historic floating lighthouse. This museum also has some modern maritime artifacts from the New Carissa, a wood-chip freighter that ran aground off of Coos Bay in February of 1999. The museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The admission fee is $10 for adults; $8 for seniors 65 and up; $5 for children ages six to 17; and children under six are free. The museum is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas.
