Description: On the east side of US 17, look for this interesting strip of specialty stores. There has been a great deal of changeover in recent years, but the new shops are just as fascinating. Relax a bit at Live Oak Yoga or peruse the new or previously owned musical selections at Sounds Better. Humans and canines alike can get groomed here. The upscale Salon Joey’s is for the two-legged; next door you’ll find Woofies for the four-legged. If you are looking for specialty jewelry, need a watch repaired, or need to have something appraised, try Trost Jewelers.

Description: With a deep history, Murrells Inlet is a great find for antiques collectors. Both US 17 Business and Bypass here are peppered with a number of antiques shops. This strip of the Grand Strand is less developed and more relaxed in atmosphere, brimming with history and full of Lowcountry color. The drive itself is pleasant and pretty. Begin at Wachesaw Row Antique Mall, just south of Inlet Square Mall on US 17 Business, where you can pick up a brochure that will list all the antiques shops. Also in Murrells Inlet is Legacy Antique Mall, where you’ll find estate jewelry, silver, and paintings.

Description: One of America’s oldest bookstores, Barnes & Noble’s large freestanding building on Seaboard Street can be seen from the US 17 Bypass, just south of Broadway at the Beach. A second location, on the old Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, is not big, but it’s equally functional. The stores are more than complete sources of reading materials, including a tremendous selection of newspapers and magazines, as well as software and a Starbucks Cafe. Barnes & Noble also offers the occasional book signing by current authors, so be sure to stop by and pick up their flyer to fill in your idle or rainy-day time.
