The PEG in the mRNA vaccines is part of the lipid nanoparticle that contains the mRNA and helps it get through the cell membrane to the mitochondria. In this case it is part of the active moiety of the vaccine.
I am sure they will be allergy testing the people who have had reactions to see if PEG is the source of the allergy. Folks with a history of allergies will then have the option of being tested to see if they should avoid the vaccines with PEG and wait on one without it.
Thanks Suzy! That is what I have heard so far. It is still early and I am sure we will hear more about any problems. There are probably plenty of scientific brains at work to see if there is a way around these potential problems. But the testing is a good first step to deal with possible side effects.
Personally, I have mast cell activation syndrome so I will have to see if my allergist thinks I can safely get the vaccine.
Thanks for the link to TMS. Very helpful. I received something very similar from my immunologist tonight. Here's a small excerpt which answers a couple of questions I had.
"Regarding the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, the FDA also notes:
-This vaccine does not contain any food allergens.
-The vials containing the vaccine do not have stoppers made from latex.
-There are no preservatives."
Personally, this helps a lot as I am also allergic to latex as well as my many and varied other allergies. I still want to know more, though. Guess I'll have to be more patient.
I looked through the ingredients of both Moderna and Pfizer, and even though I have no idea what all those strange names mean, they seem to have about the same ingredients.
Now there is a report of an MD needing to use an epi-pen in himself after receiving the Moderna vaccine, and the reason for the near fatal reaction is "shellfish allergy." Shellfish allergy is likely much more common that PEG allergy of the Pfizer vaccine. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-h...-idUSKBN29000W

That does not mean he reacted to a shellfish antigen in the vaccine. PEG is suspected because it is known to cause allergic reactions. We will have to see what testing on the folks who have allergic reactions to the vaccines shows.
For any allergy there will be a first reaction, often after taking or using the offending substance for a while. I am allergic to Septra. It caused a rash and itching the last time I took it, after using it with no problems in the past. I have a few other allergies, too. That will not keep me from getting the vaccine as none of my allergies have ever required an ER visit or use of epinephrine. I will stay at the administration site for 15 to 30 minutes afterwards.

I think most people that might go into anaphalactic shock and die without adrenalin injection probably already know they allergic to shellfish. But thanks for pointing out something that is quite irrelevant. Why was the vaccine ingredients not disclosed to the MD, who could have recognized the gobbeldy goop names on the ingredient list as shellfish? Too much secrecy in these vaccine ingredients.

The list of ingredients is in the FDA application. It is not a secret. People react to things all the time that they did not know they were allergic to until they had a reaction.
"Shellfish allergies are most often the immune system’s response to a protein found in shellfish muscles called tropomyosin. Antibodies trigger the release of chemicals such as histamines to attack the tropomyosin."
There is no tropomysin in either of the coronavirus vaccines.
Where is the ingredients of 2nd vaccine? Pfizer ingredients list do not break down the actual components of the "mRNA lipids." I believe that is where you will find the PEG. If there is nothing allergenic in either of the vaccines, why are they giving the vague warnings about allergies?

"In conclusion, cases of immediate-type PEG hypersensitivity are reported with increasing frequency, therefore, awareness of PEG’s allergenic potential should be raised and better product labeling should be discussed."
