My daughter has complained of a bump on her back. I thought it was an insect bite and that it will go away but it just got bigger and she kept complaining about it. She usually is a happy go little girl, but this bump was really hurting her, and it was two days. On the second day I decided to pop it, and a lot of blood and pus came out, so I realized she has a boil. The third day we went to the hospital. They didn't even drain it! They pushed on it with their hands like I did and just wrote her perscriptions for antibotics! This boil is just getting bigger and bigger, and she keeps complaining about the pain. When I push on it or even touch it she cries and screams, so right now I'm feeling helpless. What can I do to help this boil go away or do I just leave it alone? The doctor said she has Staph infection and I know a person could die from that type of infection. I'm glad they gave her antibotics, but what do I do about this huge boil on her left shoulder blade? It's limiting her movement, and she says it hurts when she stands up, or sits.

Up side: She says she feels better after the pain subsides of me pushing all of the gunk out of the hole. There's this one white head inside her though that is blocking the rest of the fluids from coming out of there. Unless I cut it or something, it won't come out, and I'm tired, and my heart hurts and I want to cry when I hear her scream and cry. I don't know what else to do.

Can someone tell me of a home remedy? Some sap, or a poultice I can make, or a green leaf that will drain the wound? Right now I'm just cleaning it, drying it, and putting a bandaid on it. Putting hot compresses on the boil, making her stand under the shower, letting her sit in the bath. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or should I just take her back to the hospital and demand they do their job?

I assume you mean the ER. She needs to see her pediatrician, not an ER Dr. ER Dr's don't do followups. ERs are for emergency care.

I was getting screamed at by her grandmother and worried to death by her grandfather. I went to the ER to see if they could drain it or something. Do you think her doctor can drain it in her office?

Last spring I got some sort of odd looking bite on my leg and a rash started spreading around it. My Dr gave me oral antibiotics and it still kept spreading. I was tested for MRSA, thankfully it came out negative. Finally, they sent me to the hospital on an outpatient basis for some IV antibiotic treatments and it cleared it up. I thought it was a tick bite, but apparently not. What kind of antibiotic did they put your daughter on? It should be one for subcutaneous infections, like Keflex or along that line. Good luck, I hope she gets some relief soon.

Yes, but since you have already drained the abscess, they gave you an antibiotic. Many times when an abscess is drained at the ER or office, the provider will "probe" inside to be sure all the infection pockets are out. Use the bactroban as directed (it's great), continue with the warm moist heat on the area at least 3-4 times a day, continue to have her take the med., and follow-up with her primary care person ASAP.

I'm glad she is feeling better.

Just some points for the future, though, since some people have problems with recurrent boils.

A boil is a skin infection, and as has been pointed out, sometimes the bacteria causing it are antibiotic resistant staph. Therefore, any skin infection that does not start to clear up quickly with just soap, water, a bandage, and an over the counter antibiotic cream should be seen by a doctor and cultured so antibiotic resistant infections can be identified and treated.

With a boil, an abscess forms, which is an accumulation of pus, composed of bacteria and white blood cells and dead cells. The abscess starts out as a firm red bump, but the contents eventually liquefy. The abscess cannot be drained until this liquefaction occurs. Trying to "pop" or drain it before then is useless and will just drive the infection deeper. This is an especially bad idea if the infection is on the face, as it can force bacteria into the blood vessels of the circulation of the brain. The boil may have one pocket of pus or several, forming a carbuncle.

When the doctor feels the bump, he is trying to tell whether it is firm or there is softening, called fluctuance, that indicates the boil can be drained. If it is not ready to be drained, then an antibiotic is usually started, hot compresses applied, and the area rechecked in a day or two. When it is ready to be drained, a small incision is made over the softest part of the boil to allow the pus to come out. All the pockets have to be opened up, and if the boil is large it may be packed with gauze to keep the skin incision from closing before the infection is cleared. It is not uncommon for an abscess to drain by itself, and often an early infection will clear with just the antibiotic.

I hope your daughter does not have any more problems, but if she does, please let her doctor treat it.

Get yourself some Turmeric and Goldenseal. Make a poultice by taking a 4x4 piece of gauze, lay it on a saucer, sprinkle a bit of turmeric on it, put about a Tbsp of water on the saucer, fold the poultice up and tape it over your infected area. The Turmeric will not only ease the pain, but it will draw the infection from the wound. Ginger will do the same thing, but that Turmeric is FABULOUS. Any time we get an infection in someone in our house, Goldenseal is our first line of defence for fighting it. Good luck to you. Please make sure to do some herbal research and keep your cabinet locked. The last thing you want to have to do is go to the doctor's office or ER to be exposed to horrible pathogens and have pharmaceuticals pushed on you.

Nature has provided everything we need, for just about any condition you'll encounter. For your family's sake, educate yourself on those medicines.

And you have the years and years of medical training and experience to make such claims and statements?

Yes. Or her Dr will send you to a specialist who will treat her and do followups.
