Do you know what your T score is? I've had fractures in the past but they were from hard falls so I didn't really think it was osteoporosis and my doctors never had me tested.
Yes let us know about the infusion!
Yep, -2.5 L1-L4. I was due for a bone density and that's how I got the test.
I had two insufficiency fractures in my hips from a fall on ice - that was attributed to weakened bone structure due to radiation treatments I had in 2019.
I'm apparently at a high enough risk for fracture that my doctor recommends the treatment and I listen to her. She's been my PCP for 20 yrs now. I trust her. Every treatment has pros and cons but I don't want to take another pill.
A friend who had the same infusion says it's a big nothing (for her) We'll see.
I took Reclast and recommend it. I tried Bloniva (which is an alternative to Fosamax) and my stomach couldn’t handle it. You have to take it first thing on an empty stomach and can’t eat or drink (except water) for 30 minutes afterwards. Ugh.
I am actually experiencing a 3 year “holiday” from osteoporosis meds. My spine score improved and my hip score remained the same. Both scores are in the osteopenia category. I still have to be monitored due to my age (nearly 70) and the one fall I had 5 years ago which resulted in a fracture of a vertebrae. The backwards fall isn’t what did it—I was twisting and turning to such a degree to keep from falling that I broke a bone.
I also walk about 2 miles a day, and go to the gym and do weight bearing exercises with kettlebells and dumbbells twice a week. Since I’ve never been much of an athlete, I work with a personal trainer who monitors the weight I use and my form.
If it hasn't already been said, make sure the calcium supplement is calcium citrate (there may be other good types but not useless calcium carbonate. Even CVS has a decent calcium called Citrical. A good one to purchase is Bone Up--take just 3/day. Take some magnesium separately, not with the calcium.
Make sure--NO caffeine--it eats up the calcium!!!!!!!!!! So no soda or regular coffee. Take vitamin K2 along with the calcium supplement. Drink milk if you can.
My 85 year old mother has severe osteoporosis, took Fosamax for 15 years (way too long) and for the last year took daily shots of some new expensive medication that also didn't improve anything. She had smoked for 60 years, ate very little protein. At 85, this is her only health issue, hunched over, shrunk several inches, hard to walk without pain.
I just had a DEXA scan because of that family history, no symptoms, and I was just diagnosed with it now too, a T score of -4.5. I'm not thrilled about going on Fosamax. Not on any meds now, healthy weight, walk 30-45 minutes a day, use vibration plates, take vitamins, don't drink or smoke, sleep well. I admit, I'm in denial, I don't want to believe I have it.
Any suggestions on what has helped? Or what doesn't work?
Pure Synergy has a Bone Renewal Supplement that might help. Pure Synergy is one of my favorite supplement companies.
I was diagnosed with osteopenia 6 years ago. Several scores were very close to osteoporosis. I started lifting weights 4 days a week. For upper body exercises I use up to 15 lbs weights and for lower body up to 30 lbs. I also make sure I go up and down my stairs 10 times a day and walk at least 2 miles. I’m 66 years old. I’ve have two dexa scans since then - the last one was last year. None of my scores have gotten worse and many have improved.

That's great - I'm also concentrating on going up and down stairs several times, even doing 2 at a time.
I just happened to see a chart of T-scores. It only went to -4.0. My score is -4.5. I'm still in disbelief that this can be true. My mom just sent me her most recent results and old DEXA scans and she is in the -1.5 to -2.5 range on everything. She can barely walk. I honestly don't understand how my score is off the chart and so much worse than hers.
Obviously I'll still follow all the recommendations to try to improve my bone health.
Just read an article on the benefits of taurine. Studies in rats and monkeys showed supplementing with taurine increased bone formation markers (osteocalcin), increased bone density, and decreased resorption markers.
