I know what you mean. I was trying to use Black Canyon as a benchmark as I always enjoy the drive DOWN it more than the drop into the Verde Valley. I'm not sure what is too much for the OP. Way back with an overloaded, less than reliable vehicle the drop into Benson was interesting.

1-10 through Texas canyon (outside of Tucson) has "high wind" areas and at least *one* hill that was steep enough to slow my rented Penske truck down to 35mph at full throttle... I seriously wasn't sure we were going to make it up that hill.

I'd agree it's less taxing than running through Flagstaff, but if the O.P. is freaked out by hills, they need to know that they are there. Going that route pretty much burns an extra day too.

I know this much. The OP is missing out on the best parts of the state if a steep 2000 foot grade in elevation is intimidating. I guess the OP will have to settle for the boring I 8 stretch from Casa Grande to Yuma. Moderator cut: inappropriate language Like I have said umpteen times. Those into nature and outdoor sports are in their comfort zone here. Those from the East and Midwest that get by on Scottsdale Fashion Square do not nor will they ever get what living in the Great SW is all about.

My wife just this morning left from Illinois heading to Phoenix to bring one of our vehicles down to our new house.

Because of the heat I am having her take the northern route through Des Moines, Omaha and spending the night in Denver where she will meet up with my son.

Tomorrow she will head for Albuquerque then on to Phoenix.

For those of us who commute to the Upper Midwest from Phoenix often, we all take Hwy 87 from Fountain Hills or Mesa to Payson, and then from there to Heber, and get on I-40 in Holbrook. That is much closer than going through Flagstaff, BUT, it is hilly and high altitude and windy in spots, so is the drive up I-17.

The poster wanted a relatively flat drive, and is willing to take the long way.

Take the I10 route. The hill from Flagstaff to Phoenix can be a scary drive especially coming down from Flagstaff, If one is scared they might have a natural reaction to ride the brakes.Take I10.

Good luck

Amtrak from Tucson to El Paso?
I think Amtrak is a great alternative. I have to say you are totally accurate about the ride between Phoenix and Flagstaff. It is beautiful but I struggled to go fast enough to not be a total menace to the other drivers. Is there any alternative route between Phoenix and Flagstaff?

Actually I'm glad someone unearthed this thread. My husband is going to be driving towing a small trailer in another month or so from Northern IL to San Tan Valley.

"Is there any alternative route between Phoenix and Flagstaff?"....Sure, however any way you cut it, you are going from roughly 1,000' above sea level to roughly 7,000' above sea level. I-17 is the straightest/shortest route and a great road...big trucks travel I-17 daily, they travel slower than normal, but they get there.

I'm confused. I thought I 10 only goes east and west. Help me out PLEASE. I want to take this route but not sure how to take I 10 south
